The Shoalhaven Childhood Obesity Program is a 2-year program funded by the Department of Health and Ageing to address childhood obesity in the Shoalhaven. The program facilitates a coordinated early intervention approach to the prevention and management of overweight and obese children within general practice and in collaboration with other local key professionals in the child sector.
Provision of an evidence-based education program for GPs and Practice Nurses.
Provision of dietetic services within the GP surgery to the parents of obese and overweight children 12 years and under. Practice involvement is determined by the GP. Service delivery is via the MAHS program.
Facilitation of the Shoalhaven Healthy Families program, an initiative of Health Coaching Australia. Shoalhaven Healthy Families is a lifestyle program for children aged 6 - 12 years with weight concerns. The program is delivered by a health psychologist, a dietitian and an exercise specialist. GP referral to the program is required.
Development of a coordinated local health professional approach in the management of overweight and obese children. This is assisted by the establishment of the Shoalhaven Childhood Obesity Network involving local health services, relevant child services and education agencies and addressing lifestyle factors such as physical activity and nutrition.
Delivery of a community education program to child services and education agencies utilising the expertise of local GP's and other health professionals.
