Youth Health Program

Program Manager: Dr Liz Cuninghame
Program Co-ordinator: Fiona Stasivkynas

Description

The Youth Health Program provides support to general practice through education and information to assist in increasing GPs awareness of young people and their health needs.

We provide information to assist general practices:

  • to run a more youth friendly practice
  • in communicating with young people
  • with general youth health information and guidelines
  • increase awareness of other youth service providers who can support GPs in the management of their young patients.

The Youth Health program coordinates the GPs in Schools program. The program employs a strategy to enhance GPs knowledge, skills, attitudes and self perceived competency in areas related to the health of young people and in encouraging GPs to be actively involved in adolescent health promotion and preventive health activities. These strategies result in improved youth awareness and understanding of medical culture and how to access general practice and other health services.

The program provides two health education sessions to each Year Nine class within seven local secondary schools. The first session for each class is an ‘Access Session’. The second session involves the students choosing a topic they would like the GP to talk about; topics such as Depression, Contraception, and Drugs & Alcohol.
