The Shoalhaven Division of General Practice participates in the National Prescribing Service (NPS) program to promote the quality use of medicines within the Shoalhaven in accordance with the National Medicines Policy. NPS is an independent, non-profit organisation for Quality Use of Medicines funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. The program aims to promote best practice in therapeutic areas by delivering education in the form of case studies and practice visits based on evidence based medicine. As well as promoting the many useful publications and services that NPS offer.
The NPS facilitator at the division offers visits to practices on therapeutics topics as outlined above, as well as case studies run throughout the year. These activities attract RACGP and ACRRM points and are accredited for the Quality Prescribing Initiative of the Practice Incentive Payment (QPI PIP).The NPS facilitator at the division is also available for any enquires that you may have regarding prescribing or medicines.
The therapeutic advice and information service is a medicines information line specifically for health professionals such as General Practitioners, Pharmacist and Nurses. It is funded by NPS and is manned by specialist drug information Pharmacists.

Australian Prescriber is a journal funded by NPS whose mission is to promote the quality use of medicines by providing independent, reliable, readily accessible information about drugs and therapeutics.
Australian Prescriber is an independent review of therapeutics. It aims to provide short direct and didactic reviews on a range of topics which will assist the readers in their professional duties.

The new NPS website offers a complex search facility enabling quick quality information to be obtained on specific therapeutic areas. There are also links to the many publications produced by NPS which can be downloaded electronically. There are also many facilities for consumers.
